Citec has landed a first order from Highview Power, an UK based energy storage company.

Renewable sources such as wind and solar are increasing their share of the global electricity market, but something has to fill the gap when the wind’s not blowing and the sun’s not shining. Highview Power’s cryogenic technology uses liquid air to deliver clean, reliable and cost-efficient long-duration energy storage, which helps provide stability to grids using intermittent sources of renewable power. The systems liquefy air in tanks when power is cheap, for instance, when solar power is in surplus. Then they expand the liquefied air for use to drive a power-generator turbine when necessary.

“Highview Power chose Citec as the engineering partner as they have a proven track record of modularising plant products, as well as the global resources and a strong understanding of delivering engineering projects to any country in the world”, says Javier Cavada, President & CEO, Highview Power. “Modularizing our liquid air technology will help us deploy our systems more efficiently and cost-effectively, providing an attractive advantage for project developers and investors.”

Highview Power was established in 2005 and has been working to make liquid air energy storage the most competitive long-duration solution, and now is in the phase of global commercialisation. So far the company has built two liquid air storage plants in the UK – one in greater London and one outside of Manchester.

“This first project is to develop a modular solution for one storage capacity, and from this basis, repeated projects with localisation and for varying storage capacities will be developed. We are very excited to get this first project – both parties’ ambition is to create and establish a long term partnership. The business cooperation with Highview Power is strategically important as it brings Citec into front line of new energy solutions that are eagerly needed to balance the increasing solar and wind production capacity”, says Johan Westermarck, CEO, Citec.
